BTEC First Sport

BTEC First Sport

BTEC First Sport is an option available to students making their options in Year 8. The course offers students the opportunity to gain a vocationally based qualification in PE and Sport. The course, offered by Edexcel, is the BTEC First Diploma in Sport (Performance) and results in students achieving four GCSE grades of A*-C on completion of the course.

The terminology used during the course is slightly different to that used in the traditional GCSE courses previously run. Instead of students achieving grades A, B, C, etc, students achieve in four categories. These are Distinction+, Distinction, Merit and Pass which are equivalent to A*, A, B and C respectively.

The six units give depth to the course which explains why students gain four GCSE grades as opposed to the one in traditional GCSE courses. The qualification is assessed through 100% coursework, which means students do not sit a final exam at the end of the course. The course is designed to be progressive and encourages students to show their depth of understanding through a range of techniques and media.

The PE department has a comprehensive resource library consisting of various text books, access to ICT, DVDs, CD Roms, sports magazines and journals, and coaching manuals.
