Foundation Stage ( Years 7 and 8 )

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8)

The curriculum is designed to develop the wide range of skills, knowledge, understanding and personal attitudes needed to prepare students for life and choices beyond school. The Foundation Stage combines the National Curriculum subjects and a framework of Key Competences for learning, citizenship, relating to people, managing situations and managing information.

The conventional subjects of the National Curriculum are drawn upon as  resources for students to develop these competences which are recognised through their record of achievement.

Subject specialists teach English, Maths, Science, Design Technology, Modern Languages, Information Technology, PE, Art, Geography, History, Music, RE and Drama.  Student groupings are organised by setted or mixed ability appropriate to subject learning.

The foundation stage is planned around Opening Minds which involves projects which make connections between subject learning to ease the transition from Key Stage Two to Key Stage Three.  Opportunities to personalise the curriculum and make curriculum choices start with Year 8 student options planning for Year 9.

Students in Year 8 have a personal learning interview with their parents, tutors and senior staff to plan their three year Key Stage Four curriculum. The core curriculum is English, Mathematics, Science, Citizenship, P,  RE,  ICT and Personal, Social and Health Education for all students.

Students’ strengths, enthusiasm and learning styles inform their curriculum choices.  Options are full and include Additional Science; French, German; Music, Drama, Dance, Performing Arts; Business, Media, Leisure and Tourism, Health and Social Care; Resistant Materials, Graphics, Food, Textiles and Sport.
