BTEC First

BTEC First Certificate Art

The BTEC First Certificate in Art & Design is a new course on offer to students choosing their options for Year 9. It is a vocational course, offering students the opportunity to gain a qualification whilst developing their artistic skills in a work related context.

The BTEC First Certificate, which has replaced the Edexcel Fine Art course, will allow students the chance to obtain the equivalent of two GCSE grades. Students will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction on this course, which translates into two Cs, two Bs or two As at GCSE.

Uptake for this course is high; such has been the success in the art department. Students enjoy taking responsibility for their own learning and working to tight deadlines whilst exploring their creative skills. Students also enjoy the benefits of not having to complete the 10 hour art exam, which they previously had to complete on the GCSE Fine art course. The BTEC First course is 100 % coursework. This means that students can continually improve on their overall grade throughout the two year course as their skills in handling materials naturally progress.

The course is broken down into 3 units; 2 core units and 1 specialist unit.
